Become a Leader and Be Careful Who you Listen To

By Lorraine | May 25, 2008

I referred a friend of mine to one of my clients as she had the expertise required to help this client with the nuts and bolts of her retail store. My friend visited the store and made suggestions to the owner on how she could improve the day-day running of the store, the layout, stock, staff etc.leadership

The owner was very new to the business world so coaching had been very valuable for her. Unfortunately she is surrounded by people who are not experienced in business and are very closed to new ideas.

My friend having experienced all the trials and tribulations of running a successful retail outlet new exactly what needed to be done. However, my clients’ staff thought they knew better even though they never had any prior experiences.

Unfortunately my client who is very ‘soft’ gave into the negativity of her staff and rather than get them off-side, didn’t make the changes that would expedite the success of her business and make her considerably more profit! She was more concerned about ‘keeping the peace’.

You must be very careful who you listen to.

Overwork Doesn’t Mean You’re Productive

By Lorraine | May 18, 2008

Are you one of those people that work long hours because there’s so much to do in your business?

Overwork and stress cause everything from a lack of creativity to stress-related illnesses that diminish your effectiveness. stress

A friend of mine has been in business several years and every time I speak with him, he’s always in a hurry and stressed out.

The silly thing is he wastes heaps of time doing administrative tasks which he could pay someone else to do, so he can spend his time building his business.

That’s exactly why his business hasn’t moved forward. He hasn’t got any time to be a business owner, only an administrator. Pity, as he is such a talented person and his business could be so successful and provide him with a great lifestyle.

Hey, but who am I to advise a friend? Giving free advice isn’t taken seriously.

Write It Down!

By Lorraine | May 11, 2008

Earlier this year, I was interested in the services of a Public Relations company. The Account Manager said he’d send me information in a few days. Weeks later he rang to apologise for not sending anything and would do so that week.

Can you believe it? The fact he even remembered me after all those weeks was incredible and then he had the audacity to call and say he would send it months later! As if I was going to use their services. In fact when the information arrived it was immediately tossed in the (recycle) bin.

Why Do People Over Promise And Under Deliver?Planner

From what I observe, people make promises verbally and then do not write the details down in their diary so they can remember to follow up. As long as they look in their diary and take action, there’s no chance of them forgetting!

So make sure you religiously use your diary or planner and enter everything you promise to follow-up on. Otherwise you may find not only will you lose business, you’ll also lose your credibility.

The Benefits of Working From Home

By Lorraine | May 9, 2008

I was up 5.00 a.m. for an important call I had with my overseas mentor.  As this ‘meeting’ was scheduled for 2 hours, it meant my fitness routine had to change.

So instead of heading for the gym at 5.45 a.m. I went for a run later in the morning.

I take my dogs out each day for a long walk at a time that suits me and often done things with and for my family when they’re around.

Spent 2 hours at the hairdressers yesterday afternoon, came home and put in some additional work time…because I felt like it, not because I had to.

I cannot tell you how thankful I am for being able to run my business from home.  The flexibility to do what I want when I want is priceless.

Boost Your Energy and Effectiveness

By Lorraine | May 4, 2008

Do you find your business ‘all-consuming’? Do you often feel like you could do better but don’t have enough energy to go the distance?

To operate at your peak you need to look after yourself. Get regular exercise (do something every day whether it’s walking, going to the gym, swimming etc). Your body needs movement.

In this day and age most people are far too sedentary. Healthy Lifestyle

Also feed yourself with healthy food and avoid junk food and soft drinks. You’ve only got one body and one life, keep it in good shape otherwise you won’t last the distance.

One of my clients was 45 years old, overweight by 20 kgs and wasn’t concerned about his health.

I told him that if he didn’t get serious about his health, it was only a matter of time when something would happen to him. ..and it did. He had a stroke within 6 months. He was off work for 3 months.

John was lucky that he survived. Treat yourself seriously, as you are the no. 1 asset in your life – get pro-active.
