Fresh Eyes Can See New Opportunities
By Lorraine | November 19, 2006
Last week I was in Perth for a conference.
Like I usually do, each morning I exercise either by having a workout at the gym or going for a run (these days it’s a jog). The first morning the sky was blue and I felt going for a run would be the best option. Being unfamiliar with the area I asked at the front desk of the hotel I was staying in whether there were any grassy areas or parks nearby as running on concrete is not good for the body. Two different people both said that apart from the small park out the front of the hotel, there was nowhere else. I then asked a guy who had just returned from a run and he confirmed this.
Undeterred I thought there had to be some grassy areas where we were located so off I headed off in the direction of the beach which I was told was around 15 minutes’ walk away.
Miraculously within a couple of minutes I saw the grassy area… there was a wide expanse of grass in the middle of the road which was flat and safe to use for the jog to the beach. Not only that there was heaps of grass around the shoreline close to the bike track which followed the beach route! In fact there was so many grassy areas that I was able to run for 45 minutes!
So what is the lesson in this? Had the grass miraculously appeared and these people all missed seeing it? Or were they completely oblivious to their surroundings?
What if I had listened to what they said and not gone off for a run because I believed they must know as they lived here?
How often in our business and our personal lives do we miss opportunities or solving our problems because we cannot see the obvious?
