I received this comment today from one of my newsletter subscribers and thought you’d find it of interest…

Hi!

I keep going back to your articles. A great inspiration even for a school principal!

When clients ask me what do I think or what should they do about a particular situation, I’ll automatically say to them “what do you think you should do?” If they respond with “I don’t know” I always say to them “What would you do if you did know?”. That almost always works and they provide the solution.

I use this with the teachers and support staff in our school all the time! They use their creativity and feel great to be able to solve the «school problems». I often have a pretty good idea of what the solutions should be (43 years… gasp… of experience) , BUT, they are ready to implement their own solutions much better when they know THEY decided what to do.

And I always tell them how I appreciate solution-oriented staff members, which is absolutely true. This is a crucial point also. People need to feel appreciated and to be involved in the decision process / not to be TOLD what to do by a BOSS.
